Did you know ... if you established a self directed or a designated fund with the Phoenix Foundation you could elect to have the annual revenues from your fund to go to any local, national, or international charity registered with Revenue Canada?

Granting Highlights 2005-2006

Friends of the Library
The Library staff is thrilled with the addition of the book cart at the book drop. At the library the book drop in the front door receives books when the library is closed. Previously, the books posted through the chute landed on the floor. A piece of foam was put in to soften the blow, but there was damage as they dropped on one another. By purchasing a depressible book cart the books do not drop any distance. As the weight in the box grows, there is a special spring that allows the top of the cart to depress in order to hold more books. This will save on mending and replacement costs in the long run and extend the life of these library resources.

Greenwood Municipal Pool
In the past, part of the start up process for opening the pool included turning on the gas heater to warm the water to a bearable temperature. The swim lesson programs began and ran the first four weeks of summer in the morning hours, leaving the warmer afternoons to public swimming. This created a problem for some of the younger students as some mornings the water was so cold they would not go in the water. Two days after installing the new solar blanket, the water temperature was so warm patrons were complaining that it wasn’t “refreshing” enough, so we turned the gas heater off. Usually our gas expense at the pool costs between $2,500 and $3,000 for the two and a half months of operation, but with the success of the solar blanket, we anticipate a significant decrease in this cost.

Y SHIFT Comings and Goings

We have been keeping busy giving grants and coming up with new projects for next year. YSHIFT issued two grants this year. The first grant was to help fund childcare for the Peer Mentors, young moms’ skill building program. The second grant was issued to OUTLET, a Gay Lesbian Transgender Bisexual Two Spirited youth support group, located throughout Kootenay and Boundary communities. The grant went towards transportation and food for their meetings.

Some other highlights of our past year have been hosting an Open House for all our municipal candidates in the November election, assisting with GFREC Teen Nights, a retreat at Jewel Lake, attending a leadership seminar in Vernon, helping out at the Kettle River Youth Forum and sending a YSHIFT member to Saskatchewan for the Community Foundations of Canada

National Conference. We received a grant to move ahead with our Community Builder Project. Our project is aimed at assisting non-profit societies with various tasks or jobs that need doing. We feel it is a great way to get youth involved in community organizations and to help those groups run by volunteers. If you are a non-profit group who may be able to benefit from some help from YSHIFT, please contact one of our adult advisors, Becky Deane or Marci Butler.

We are getting ready for a new year coming up. We have a few of our members leaving to pursue their education and are actively looking for new members wanting to take on some responsible roles with YSHIFT. If you or someone you know may be interested in joining YSHIFT please contact our adult advisor at becdea@telus.net.
